Congratulations to Saffeya-Grace Ibrahim, a junior at Sonoran Science Academy-Tucson, for being named a Future Innovators of the year by the Arizona Technology Council and Arizona Commerce Authority.
She prepared for this by working on her science project (Traditional Native American medicine: A novel approach to penicillin in the control of streptococcus-pyrogenes ATCC 19615) in a lab after school for about 6 months. The surprising results came in the very final stages of the project, just in time to be presented at the Southern Arizona Research, Science and Engineering Foundation (SARSEF) last spring. After winning several awards there, including being promoted to the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), Saffeya was invited to submit her project to the Governor’s Celebration of Innovation competition through a written and video presentation.
Saffeya shares that it was an exciting and fun experience, and that she feel honored to have her work recognized!
Winners and finalists for the 2020 Governor’s Celebration of Innovation Awards were announced by the Arizona Technology Council and Arizona Commerce Authority this week, “Honoring the leaders and visionaries making critical contributions to technology, bioscience and education throughout the state of Arizona”. The winners will be honored during the Governor’s Celebration of Innovation (GCOI), which will take place during a live virtual event on Wednesday, November 4, from 4 to 7:30 p.m.
The Future Innovators and Teacher of the Year award winners were evaluated and chosen by an independent selection committee, including members of the Arizona Council of Engineering and Scientific Associations, which supports, promotes and coordinates programs and activities of the engineering and science associations within the state of Arizona through facilitated communication and leadership.
